Understanding The Difference Between Memory Care Facilities And Nursing Homes

by Amanda Palmer

When it comes to housing and assistance for seniors, not all facilities are designed to take care of the same population or to take care of the same needs. That is why when looking for a facility for the loved one in your life, you need to understand the different care options available to you and you need to have a deep understanding of your loved one's day-to-day care needs and medical conditions.

Nursing Home Facilities

Nursing home facilities are designed for individuals who need enough assistance that living at home on their own, or even in an assisted living facility, is not feasible. Nursing homes provide various levels of care, and many nursing homes are divided up into different sections.

Nursing homes are great for individuals who need help with things such as getting dressed and taking a bath, and who need assistance with remembering to take their medication on time. In addition to providing these services, nursing homes also take care of residents' rooms, prepare all their meals, and provide social activities for everyone to participate in.

Nursing homes can also be temporary stopping points for individuals who are recovering from a serious medical condition, such as a heart attack, fall, or other serious medical events. Nursing homes provide medical assistance and care during the recovery process. It also makes it easier to access rehabilitation services, as many nursing homes have in-house rehab facilities so one can easily get the occupational and physical rehabilitation that is necessary to get back in good health.

Many nursing homes have a layout that is more like a hospital or a dorm.

Memory Care Facilities

Memory care facilities are designed for individuals who have advanced dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Those who suffer from memory disorders need a very different environment than individuals who are just getting older and need physical assistance.

The physical layout of memory care facilities are designed to feel more like a home. The dining room is set up more like a personal dining room and less like a cafeteria. The colors of the memory care facility are bright and cheerful, with lots of lights. The safe is designed to be safe, to protect one from wondering. Many memory care facilities also lockdown at night, to ensure residents don't wander inside. Most memory care facilities have a small staff to resident ratios and try to provide an engaging environment.

If your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer's, a memory care facility is probably the right setting for them. If your loved one just needs extra care and attention, a nursing facility may be the right fit.

About Me

Choosing A Great Assisted Living Center

After my grandmother was too old to live on her own any more, I knew that I had to do something to keep her comfortable and safe. I started looking into assisted living facilities, and before I knew it, I had narrowed down the search to a few different places. It was absolutely incredible to see how many different options there were, so I felt great about only having to choose between a few. After I talked with my grandmother about what she wanted, it made it even easier to choose, and she is now comfortably living in a great environment. Check out this blog for more information.
