Who Makes Decisions About Assisted Living Or Nursing Homes?

by Amanda Palmer

If you are searching for a place that offers services to older adults who need consistent personal care and attention, assisted living is the most popular option. Although it can be a very difficult decision to make, there comes a time when you must think about what's best for your loved ones versus what you can offer. If you know in your heart that you cannot provide enough time and care that they need and deserve, perhaps there is a much better place that can provide shelter, security, and proper aid.

The decision about assisted living or nursing homes is something that should not be taken lightly. It involves people who are close to you and have probably been around you all your life. It is hard to be reasonable when it is affecting the feelings of the people you love the most. However, there are few ways that you can do to at least help alleviate the pain and stress of this experience:

Open Communication

You should not be the only one to decide on moving your loved ones to assisted living. Even if they are suffering from memory loss such as Alzheimer's or dementia, it is important to communicate to them why this is a good decision. When they are involved in the process, it is more likely that you can determine their preferences about the services that they need and the type of community they are looking for. This can be helpful when they start to transition as they will have more positive association towards assisted living.

Do Not Put Pressure on Your Loved Ones

Be patient with your loved ones. Give them enough time to accept and adjust to this situation. Listen when they have doubts and give them honest but cautious answers. The less pressure you put on their shoulders, the better chance there is in getting their approval.

Ask help from Senior Living Advisors

Get a list of senior communities that can accommodate the needs of your loved ones. Don't just rely on photos, brochures, and advertisements. If possible, make time to visit these communities to find out for yourself if any one of them is the perfect fit. If you don't know anyone who is in the same situation as yours, ask the Senior Living Advisor to introduce you to someone who has done it all.

If you have done these, then you can be assured that the right decision has been made for you and your loved ones. At the end of the day, the priority is to keep them safe, healthy and happy. They will not lose you but they will gain more.

About Me

Choosing A Great Assisted Living Center

After my grandmother was too old to live on her own any more, I knew that I had to do something to keep her comfortable and safe. I started looking into assisted living facilities, and before I knew it, I had narrowed down the search to a few different places. It was absolutely incredible to see how many different options there were, so I felt great about only having to choose between a few. After I talked with my grandmother about what she wanted, it made it even easier to choose, and she is now comfortably living in a great environment. Check out this blog for more information.
